When we are in public, we sometimes want to keep what we are doing on our device private and unseen from others. Our online activity can be hidden by taking certain precautions and using different methods. People often enjoy being nosey, so we decided to take a look at how you can prevent them from peering over your shoulder to have a peek at what you’re doing.
Be Aware of Your Surroundings
It may sound obvious, but if you are doing something on your device that needs to be kept private, such as viewing employee data, then you should ensure that you are in an unrevealing location. For example, if you are in a café, choose a seat that is by the wall, therefore, you have no one behind you who can view your screen (you are also more likely to find a plug socket here too!). Another example would be if you are on public transport, try to get a seat on your own. Now, this can be tricky, especially in highly populated areas, like London, but if you can book a seat, maybe consider reserving into a quiet carriage or two seats. For more information on how to keep your activity private in public spaces, take a look at our previous blog on how to securely get work done on the train.
Be Cautious of Public Wi-Fi Networks
We all love free Wi-Fi! Being able to surf the web without using any of your data is delightful; however, public Wi-Fi networks do carry an element of risk. Connecting to an open Wi-Fi exposes you to potential hacking and viruses. Because anyone can connect to it, people with the wrong intentions could hack the system and infect your device with a virus, or worse, gain access to your information. Now, this is a very extreme look on open Wi-Fi connections, in general, they are fine to use, but we just advise that you are cautious. When using public networks, avoid going on any websites/apps that expose your personal information, like your bank account. We have a previous blog on why connecting to unknown Wi-Fi networks is so risky where we delve into more detail.
Use A VPN (Virtual Private Network)
Using a VPN is excellent for not only accessing foreign sites, such as American Netflix, but it is also a brilliant safety tool! By using a VPN, you can remain anonymous online, which is perfect if you are connecting to public Wi-Fi. A virtual private network works by mimicking a connection as though you were connected to a private network, like your internet at home. The data from your device appears to come from the VPN server and its location rather than your phone, tablet or computer, whichever you are using, and your location.
Use a Privacy Screen
Put your mind at ease and use a privacy screen! By using a privacy screen, you can go about your usual activity on your device in public without the worry of someone peering over your shoulder and viewing what you are up to. The screens work by blacking out the device display from certain angles. Anyone who attempts to view your device from 30 degrees or 45 degrees (depending on the type of screen you use), will only see a black screen and will not be able to know what you are doing. Whether you are scrolling through Facebook or you are emailing clients from work, keeping your activity private is a good idea because it gives you peace of mind. Here at Viascreens, we offer privacy screens for an array of devices, but perhaps our most popular is the phone privacy screen, and this is likely due to it being the most used device in public.
