Is Samsung's $2,000 Phone Worth It?

24th Jun 2019

As technology advances, smartphones are becoming increasingly intelligent and therefore, more expensive. For creators, to cover the costs that incur when developing incredible devices, the price must increase for the customer. Samsung announced back in November 2018 that they were going to launch a smartphone that would cost nearly $2,000! This shocked many and left people wondering what is so amazing about this device to justify it being so pricey?

What is the Samsung Galaxy Fold?

Samsung has developed a foldable mobile device, called the “Samsung Galaxy Fold”. The smartphone has a 4.6-inch front screen, and when unfolded, the device becomes the size of a tablet, with a 7.3-inch screen. Both displays deliver incredible resolution; the smaller screen has an HD+ (12:9) display, and the larger screen unveils a QXGA+ resolution (4.2:3).

In terms of camera quality, the Galaxy Fold doesn’t disappoint; there are six cameras in total! The main cameras are on the back of the phone, here situates three of them. The setup of this trio is the same as the Samsung Galaxy S10 and S10 Plus. At the top of the 4.6-inch display, there is a 10MP (f/2.2) camera, perfect for capturing some selfies! Then, in the top right corner of the larger screen, there are two more cameras; one 10MP and one 8MP, creating a background blur so that you can take the best quality pictures.

The functionality of the phone is quite smart; for example, if you open an app on the smaller display and then open the device to the larger screen, the app will be open ready to use. This makes switching between screens very user-friendly. Furthermore, when using the large display, you can have up to three apps open at one time and see all of them on the screen. This is much like a laptop, making the device useful for people conducting business and those who require multiple tabs open at one given time.

The Galaxy Fold comes with plenty of storage; 512GB in fact! This is more than enough for music, games, photos etc. Unfortunately, the device doesn’t offer expandable storage, so if you do find yourself running short on space, you will have to either delete something or opt for the cloud. In terms of battery, the Samsung Galaxy Fold is equipped with two batteries. The device has a total battery size of 4,380mAh, Samsung has claimed this will last all day, but this very much subjective to how you use the smartphone.

What is the verdict?

Two batteries, six incredible cameras and two screens - As the first of its kind, the Samsung Galaxy Fold looks like an exciting product. However, there are some noticeable downfalls. The first issue being its price; not many people will be able to afford to spend $2,000 on a phone, making this product somewhat inaccessible to most. As with any phone, there is an expected life expectancy, and with the Samsung Galaxy Fold, it is roughly five years. This life span is primarily affected by the folding screen. The hinge system will eventually wear, and there is a noticeable crease in the screen where it folds, which will only become more apparent as time goes on.

The front screen, or the “mobile screen”, is much smaller in size than other smartphones. For example, Apple’s iPhone XS has a 5.8-inch display, and Samsung’s Galaxy S10 has a whopping 6.1-inch screen. The Galaxy Fold’s mobile screen is just 4.8-inch, which may not seem like a big difference, but when using the device, you do notice the reduced size.

The launch of the foldable phone was set to be in April; however, there have been some issues. These problems have left Samsung with no choice but to delay introducing the product to the market. During the testing period, the main problem found was with the screen – it was breaking after just days of using the device!

Overall, this phone appears to be an incredible step forward for technology and is an exciting prospect. However, until the solutions to these issues are solved, the phone may not match its hefty price tag. With these delays, will Samsung still be the first company to launch the first foldable mobile? Companies such as Huawei, Motorola and LG are all in the process of creating their own foldable mobiles, so maybe one of them will beat Samsung to it!
