Over the past year, you may have heard the term ‘5G’ a lot. Mobile phone providers have been working on producing faster mobile internet; therefore, we welcome the 5G network. The network hasn’t been launched yet as some providers are yet to introduce it. In this blog, we take a further look into what 5G is and when you can use it.

What Is 5G?

5G is the fifth generation of mobile networks. Previous generations you may be familiar with are 2G, 3G and 4G. Compared to these networks, 5G is set to be much faster and more reliable. Unlike the previous generation, 5G will be able to be used on an array of devices, not just a single form of technology; it is referred to as the “network of networks”. 5G is set to open doors to many new features, such as 5G broadband, holographic technology, 5G TV’s and driverless cars.

Where Is 5G Available?

As of today (October 2019), the following locations have coverage of the super-fast 5G network:

In May 2019, EE became the first mobile provider to launch 5G in the UK, which was closely followed by Vodafone and Three and O2 launched their 5G network this month! Please note that although mobile operators have stated that they provide 5G coverage in certain cities, this, unfortunately, doesn’t mean that the whole city will be able to use it. For example, Glasgow has 5G coverage, but it will likely only be available in the more built-up areas. Over time, coverage should work throughout the city.
